The Blessing of this Life

This life journey never fails to surprise me. What wonder we can live in when we stay open to the flow of guidance. Awakening is a process. It can take a lifetime for some, a moment for others and a work in progress for most. Over the last few weeks we have been travelling from PA to VA, NY to NJ to end up spending 10 days in Boulder, Colorado. We were blessed to share a concert at The Yoga Journal Conference with Saul David Raye and Kia Miller as well as accompanying Kia in her yoga classes.

We had planned to be in Boulder a whole week leading up to a concert and workshop we were teaching. Once there we began to think to ourselves , “why are we here for a whole week for just this one workshop and concert, we have so much to do! How can we afford to just chill in Boulder for a whole week???”

The mountains speak and we surrendered the controlled ideas and relaxed into the land and the knowing that there is a Divine plan at work which we most of the time have no idea what it is until it shows up! A few days in with our dear friend and producer in Boulder, her father begun to make his transition after spending a year in Hospice. We ended up chanting and praying at his bedside for two days whilst he found the courage to let go of this earthly coat and go back on his Soul Journey. Along with his daughter, a powerful kundalini yoga teacher with a heart of gold, it seemed we were there as ushers for him and a comfort to our friend who needed to be held during this time. It was a magical time, as magical as a birth, when the body chooses their last exhale.

It showed me so much about our attachments to life and to people. Yet, as my husband would say, all we are really attached to is this breath. It showed the utter divine plan that is always in order and if we trust, the guidance and the grace is present. We were clear that we became a big part of this father and daughter’s life, playing guitar, chanting at his bedside….Wahe Guru……Mother….. Akah would hold sacred rhythms with the rattle and sing native songs, holding a vibration of peace and love whilst children uttered words of forgiveness over the phone so that he could feel like he was complete and release his Earth coat. What a gift. One of the elements that taught me so much was to see how his daughter handled everything that she was faced with. With so much grace and courage, allowing her emotions to flow. We experienced the full spectrum of life within a week. Tears, laughter, grief, sadness, joy and so much more that I have no words for right now. Only the experience is left imprinted in my heart.

Akah looked at me the next morning and simply said ” Aykanna grew up”. It was a mesmorizing and blessed experience which has left with a renewed and deepened appreciation for this breath, this life, our friendships and the call to keep sharing our gifts. Keep sharing yours, it always makes a difference even when it goes quietly unnoticed.

Wanderlust Festival Experience

It’s late Sunday night, Lake Tahoe, Wanderlust Festival just ended. Some 5000 people rolled through this 2nd year festival and experienced yoga, music and nature set in a backdrop of a gorgeous mountain resort in Tahoe. Some of the greatest teachers from the US were present delivering this ancient technology each with their own twist on it. Music from Kirtan to Michael Franti to the Wailers was blaring from noon to midnight. Up on top of the mountain, it was pool party time with Dj’s and all sorts of fun happenings. There was something here for everyone.

What touched me the most were the tears I would see roll down people’s faces in yoga classes as hearts were breathed open, stress relieved and maybe a new light had made itself through the cracks of someone’s controlled existence.

My experience? As Aykanna, Akah and I set a strong intention before we came.

An intention to fully show up, be engaged, present and ready to share this healing music as a tool to uplift consciousness. We also proclaimed that whatever we had to give was enough. We were enough amongst the super stardom status that is being created in this new wave of yoga and music business that cannot be escaped as I once heard someone say “wherever they are a lot of people, there is big business”. It can be easy for any of us, doing what we love or not, to get into the mode of just DOING, going through the motions. I experienced the power of intention in a new way, when one truly lives from intention, life responds accordingly. The whole Omniverse cooperates and is at one’s service.

We had a successful festival, met incredible people, shared Aykanna’s vision and now its time to go rest and nestle in the hot springs for a day and night!

We were blessed once again to play with our family Kia Miller’s and Tommy Rosen’s yoga classes. On the mountain top we laughed, we chanted, we cried, we gave thanks and we shared all that we had to give. It’s good to be alive. Fully.

Yoga Music Review: Mother by Aykanna

I have been in a big fan of AYKANNA ever since I first heard them playing “Beautiful Am I” in the Yogi Tea Cafe at Summer Solstice 2010. I can remember that it was a random night of hanging out and talking with friends in the Cafe. At first we we weren’t really paying any attention to the band on stage, but I couldn’t help but hear some of the music in the background. Eventually I had to interrupt everyone and ask, “Who are these guys?”

It was lead singer Sukhdev Jackson with her very rich and soulful voice along with Akahdahmah Jackson on percussion. Aykanna’s overall sound is very catchy, smoothy and funky with Jazz and Soul influences. They are kind of likeKundalini Yoga’s version of the jazz vocalist. No matter which song you listen to, you can’t help but find your self humming along to it throughout the day.Aykanna’s second release, Mother, has an intention to heal the Divine Feminine and the Mother Earth through music and mantra. Yogi Bhajan said it best when he said, “As long as humanity does not learn to respect the woman, there will be no peace on this Earth. There will be war always.” Through praising and honoring the Divine Feminine we can heal the earth. Without it we have no hope. Humanity can no further without the realization of the Divine Feminine.Mother kicks off with Bluezone which is The Lord’s Prayer in Jesus’ native language, Aramaic. Aramaic is a language much like Gurmukhi in which the words were created before their meaning was attached to them. Much of the meaning in the biblical version of the Lord’s Prayer is lost in the translation from Greek to English. ‘Bluezone’ transitions from Aramaic to the English version that was translated directly from Aramaic. There are not a lot of recordings out there of the Aramaic or English translation of the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer out there. Listen and chant along to tune into the consciousness of this great teacher’s prayer in his original language.The album moves into Adi Shakti, the mantra to invoke the Divine Feminine energy. After about a minute into the mantra, it is nearly impossible to not want to snap your fingers and move around. Aykanna’s ‘Adi Shakti’ is a very much a feel good and fun version of the mantra. You can feel the joy in Sukhdev’s voice. This one can be used in an 11 minute meditation and if you are meditating on the mantra Adi Shakti, I recommend adding this version into your rotation. This is quickly becoming a favorite!Rising with the Dawn is peaceful song with light guitar. It can be a nice song to play while getting ready for your morning sadhana or a song to have on your wake-up playlist on your alarm clock.Aykanna adds their unique touch to the Aad Such mantra. Aad Such begins with a steady rhythm and really picks up in middle intertwined with some catchy English lyrics and Sat Nam Wahe Guru Ji. ‘Aad Such’ reminds us despite everything, you shall always be you.Sukhdev shows us her singer/ songwriter side in the original song, I am Woman which is an inspiring song about claiming your true Divine Feminine power. ‘I am Woman’ reveals the journey from being a little girl seeking approval to gain love to the woman who is confident in being who she is.Ek Ong Kaur (Mul Mantra) starts off with a light guitar in the background and picks up with percussion in the middle. Aykanna fuses the Gurmuhki and English translation of the Guru Nanak’s first mantra.Har Haray Haree is a unique version of this popular mantra used in a number ofKundalini Yoga meditations and White Tantric Yoga. It is very upbeat with some Jamaican flavor to it with shakers, congas and background vocals. This version can also be used as an 11 minute meditation. If you ever are meditating on this mantra, you need to also add this version into your rotation. Very fun!Mother- Father is an original prayer in English with some light guitar for the Divine Mother and Heavenly Father. It can be a nice song to use during a savasana or to end a yoga class.The Butterfly Effect is the inspiring words coming through Akahdahmah recorded live at a retreat in Costa Rica. You need to hear this!True to the album’s name, Mother closes with Jai Ma, the mantra for praising the Divine Mother. Sukhdev adds her own personal touch to this wonderful mantra with her own heartfelt lyrics singing to inspiration of the Divine Mother of all. It is very beautiful.This is an excellent album to add to your collection and especially good for honoring the Divine Feminine. After centuries of male domination, we are at a stage of our human evolution where we are moving back into balance of the male and female energies. Without this balance and elevation of Divine Feminine, we will not be able to get any further in our development as a race. Mother is very deep, heartfelt, catchy and soulful. Its been a life long journey for Pauline Sukhdev and Akahdahmah to discover their true gift within. Through the trials and victories experienced on the path of life we have learned that when you develop and offer your talents with love to uplift others you will also be healed, blessed and experience miracles at the same time.

To be what we came to Earth to Be for us is a journey of liberation from the world created by the profit driven corporate information complex. This journey of liberation moves us beyond what we know about ourselves. When we become conscious of our responsibility to Be our purpose, we bring value to our life as family members thriving on Earth together.

To experience all the provisions your Truth provides requires the knowledge of your Sacred Self.

To walk this path requires commitment to discovering and refining the gifts and talents within to share with the world.

We are deep in the final production phases of our 2nd CD. This CD is an offering to our Mother Earth, Mothers on Earth and the Divine Feminine Principle in us all. Being an available channel for this CD to manifest was a test of releasing the need to have our preferences fulfilled so the passion of the creative process could express fully through every vessel required to bring this type of art work to life.

As we were opening ourselves to let go and truly trust in our purpose by sending out this kickstarter video to you, in that moment at the studio a blue jay brought a acorn to our door window, looked at us in the eyes and flew away.

At that very moment we where finishing the final edits on our kick starter campaign and realized it was time to let go of any fear and doubt and Be our Truth in the world.

What is AYKANNA? Who is AYKANNA?

AYKANNA is a Sacred Sound System on a mission to reveal the healing and miracle power of music to all people.

AYKANNA is an Amaraic word that is part of a meditation, called the Lord’s Prayer. It is important to comprehend that during ancient middle eastern times there was no religious connection to these words like there is today. It was used to for spiritual attunment.

These sacred sounds were used as a way to tune into the inexhaustible power of the Great Parent of Creation, a power that is available to all. It was recited as a way to open the door of peace, health, prosperity and an understanding of our oneness with the Source of Life.

The word Aykanna, first appears in the 4^th line. The literal translation in Aramaic is, “just as.” Aramaic scholar, Neil Douglas-Klotz informs us that in this ancient language a word is more than its literal translation it also has a spiritual, metaphorical and metaphysical meaning. In his book, Prayers of the Cosmos, he translates the literal and other meanings of the the word, “ Aykanna (“just as”) carries the sense of a determined desire toward consistency and stability. We pray that God’s heart-desire be done consistently through our lives in form as it is in sound(word) and light(image or vision).”

To us music is alive, intelligent and has a harmonizing purpose. We have learned to release the need to create music. Instead, we allow music to reveal what it needs to be. Being the instrument for music to express through gave us the experience of Aykanna as the communicating link between Heaven and Earth. A link or channel that is delivering life energy from Heaven to establish harmony on Earth.

We, Pauline Sukhdev and Akahdahmah, without knowing started out on our individual path using music as a way to remain sane, sober, heal and sometimes just help us to focus on appreciating life.

Aykanna resurrected into our life when we where called to be musical support for yoga classes and retreats. Little did we know that we where initiated into BEING, Aykanna.

We were called by our dear friend Kia Miller to do music for her yoga DVD and after finishing, the project also birthed into our 1st CD, “Livelight”. This is when we realized Aykanna is more than an ancient metaphoric word on paper. It is a very real living channel of Life energy in us all that allows Heaven to continuously revitalize life on Earth as well as our Earth Mother.

Who is Aykanna? We are ALL Aykanna!

We are the channel that Heaven expresses through to establish, peace, abundance, love, and harmony on Earth.
